Rastaclat Celebrates Earth Day

Rastaclat is more than a lifestyle company, it is a brand built on principles: uniting through our differences, making a change for the better, and Spreading Positive Vibrations. This year, in honor of Earth Day, the Rastaclat family decided to do our part and get out there and clean up the streets. We teamed up with the Zero Trash Organization and headed out to Laguna Beach, CA, picking up trash and having a blast while doing it!

In order to promote the week of Earth Day (April 20-27), we will be having a special 30% off of select hemp bracelets and belts to add some flair while you are out there making the world a better place. A big thanks to the Zero Trash Founder, Chip McDermott, for helping us get organized and do our part. We hope that you all make an effort to get involved, we only have one planet and it’s all of ours; let’s make sure to preserve it for ourselves and future generations!

Every year on April 22, over a billion people the world over do their part to make our planet a better place. That day was designated in 1970 and marks what many consider to be the birth of the modern environmental movement. During this time there was a lot of political activism, but saving the Earth and “being green” were not high on the priority list; most of the conversation was about Vietnam. But, it was also an era where large gas guzzling cars were the norm, air pollution was an accepted sign of prosperity, and mainstream America as a whole was oblivious to the phrase “environmentally conscious.” Slowly, but surely, the issue began to rise, largely due to Rachel Carson’s 1962 New York Times Best Seller “Silent Spring.” The book sold more than half a million copies, raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment, and public health more than any other publication at that time.

Earth Day founder, Gaylord Nelson, was inspired to make a change after witnessing the catastrophe of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. He realized that if he could infuse the energy of the anti-war movement with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. After much persuasion and recruiting, a team was assembled and an initiative was put together. Then on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans from coast to coast took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy and sustainable environment; Earth Day was born.

Since 1970 many advancements have been made: the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was formed; the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts were all passed; and in 1990 the movement went global with over 200 million people in 141 countries rallying together and contributing to make our planet a better place. Today there is still much to do and many adversaries who oppose progress. Climate change deniers, well-funded oil lobbyists, reticent politicians, a disinterested public, and a divided environmental community all contribute to curbing advances in progress and change.

The challenge is an astronomical one, and a fight that must be met with unity, determination, and positivity. Here’s a few pics from our cleanup in Laguna, enjoy!
